If yours is a wireless-g network then you can probably set up your
wireless router to force the use of WPA. So far WPA seems to be a
robust encryption method but I believe it is unavailable for wireless-b
equipment.

I'm really ignorant about networks. I'm on a fast cable connection
with a wired router as DHCP server and a wireless router attached to
the wired router. The wireless is not using any encryption, it is open
to the public. I live in an affluent neighborhood and don't really
care if someone might horn in a little, my bandwidth doesn't seem
cramped at all.
The topography is: cable modem>4-port wired router>3 unsupported
desktops & a wireless router>a few newer laptops+neighbors?
I'm messing with my printer tonight (an HP), and open Printer Setup
Utility and there is a new "shared" printer shown. It says it's a
Brother Laser model HL-1440 and it's at Host 192.168.0.137 on my local
network. Since I've never owned a Brother Laser printer, I'm about to
delete it, when it dawns on me that perhaps it belongs to a neighbor
of mine, and that somehow my wireless router has intertwined our local
networks? Is this possible?
I don't know much network stuff, but I open Network Utility and in the
Netstat>Display Routing Table Information it shows:
Destination Gateway Flags Ref Use
Netif Expire
192.168.0.137 0:30:65:1c:5:60 UHLW 0 18 en0
237
I try to Ping the address and get 100% packet loss, which I guess
means nothing is there?
This seems bizarre that a specific printer with an IP address would
appear out of thin air and be shown in multiple applications. This OS
is a clean install, not copied from elsewhere, and never used with any
shared printers before.
Any ideas on what's going on?
Thanks! Kris
