The Mach 5 board supported stock 300 and 350mhz cpu's for a starter. I
am using a flashed Radeon 7000 video card. Had a little trouble
finding the proper sequence of operations to flash it but after that
it is working great.

I see a flashed Radeon 7000 video card will work under Panther. Anyone else have suggestions for video cards I can get at a reasonable price to run Panther on my 9600/300?

AFAIK, just about any decent ATI card will work in OS X with XPostFacto's drivers. I've tested Mach64 cards with Panther in a couple different Macs (PCPro, Beige G3) and was pleasantly surprised.

Which one you choose depends mostly on how much "video horsepower" you want and what you consider a "reasonable price" to pay for it. If you're a penny pincher like me you might find a 8MB Xclaim Rage Pro card meets your needs, and cheaply at that. Lots of Rage 128 cards on ebay and/or the Swaplist if you think you'll need at least 16MB VRAM. You'll only need to spend the extra $ for a Radeon if you plan to do a lot of 3D-intensive stuff.
