The upgrade to Panther went unsuccessfully, so I decided to wipe all the
drives clean and start from scratch. But when I tried to install OS 9.1
again, I had issues trying to install it. Sometimes it would boot up and get
stuck while the extensions were loading. On other occasions, it would get
past loading extensions and allow me to begin the installation process.
Shortly thereafter, the installation would stall.
I pulled out the all the third-party cards and tried the installation again,
but still could not install OS 9.1. I even tried a different installation
CD, but with similar results. I zapped the PRAM several times and reset the
CUDA switch. Again, similar results prevailed. I pulled out the PRAM battery
and left it out over night, installed it again, and booted up the computer.
But this did not help either.
I now suspect that there must be some sort of hardware issue. And I am
thinking the most likely suspect is the CD-ROM drive.
I agree with the CD-ROM drive as a likely cuplrit. I've tried a
number of OS X and other installs on PowerSurge and Beige G3 machines
and I've had to swap out a number of CD-ROM drives before the install
would go through smoothly.
Usually OS 9 installs don't give me much of a problem but I sometimes
get a hang during bootup before the Extensions parade but after the
progress bar has moved about 1/4 inch or so. I have a number of
castoff PS Macs here at work so I usually ditch that one and move to
another so I haven't had to troubleshoot the issue fully yet.
Now that I think about, I have a generic OS 9.1 and 9.2.2 install
which I copy from another server Mac so I don't do those installs
from CD anymore. Maybe if you get it going or if you have access to
another Mac, you can generate a default OS 9.1 and burn it to a CD to
use for a drag install for future use. Works well for me.
