Oakwood Ave. Geneseo, Illinois IRONIES OF THE PASSION A Series of Lenten Sermons and Liturgies Presented by: Carl C. Fickenscher II Summary and Description: Lent 1: "He Speaks the Truth" Lent 2: "The Greatest What?" Lent 3: "See to It Himself" Lent 4: "What Blood Buys" Lent 5: "Not Worth Believing" Lent 6: "Et tu?" Sunday of the Passion: "Hosanna When You're Lowest" Maundy Thursday: "That We Might Eat the Passover" Good Friday: "The Greatest Irony of All" Easter Vigil: "The First Easter Sermon" i-ro-ny: n. 1. a figure of speech in which the words express a meaning that is the direct opposite of the intended meaning. 2. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected. 3. the incongruity of this. The story of our Lord's passion is history's greatest irony: God turning evil into good, God accomplishing His eternal design through the wickedness and foolishness of men; God Himself, Jesus, emptying Himself of His power and becoming weak; the Creator worked over by His creatures; the Holy One becoming sin for the purifying of the putrid. The Gospel accounts of Jesus' last hours are likewise filled with twists, unexpected turns, that could be almost laughable if they were not so tragic. During our time together in this workshop, we'll look at some of these texts and, together, discover how they might help our hearers experience the saving suffering of our Lord in new, unexpected ways or perhaps find new meaning for their lives in the familiar stories. In addition to the sermon studies, we will discuss homiletical topics such as how a preacher can match texts to varieties of sermonic forms. Outlines, several full sermons, and liturgies for Lenten midweek and Holy Week services will be offered. Date: 11 January 2010 For Questions or to Register, Contact: Rev.
