Free Conference on the Brief Statement

Redeemer will host a free conference on Monday January 18, 2010 A+D.
The theme of the conference are the perceived problems of the Brief
Statement. The Brief Statement is one of the official doctrinal
statements of the LC-MS. Our congregations, pastors, and teachers have
vowed to uphold its teachings. It has, however, some problems, as
recent examination by disaffected members of the ELCA has revealed. It
seems bold, and outdated, in its assertion that the pope is the
antichrist. It has a very weak view of the Office of the Ministry and
reads Matthew 28 in a novel way, unknown to the Church fathers,
Luther, or the Lutheran fathers. And it embraces the terminology of
“verbal inspiration” and “inerrancy” to describe the inspiration of
the Scriptures, terms that some think are loaded with the baggage of
American fundamentalism.

The answers to these problems are not forgone. We make no promise that
we will answer them fully. But we will attempt to address them
together, fraternally, and to seek to better understand the document
and its setting, its application and implementation in today's Church,
and the concerns being raised by Confessional Lutherans. To help us do
this we will employ a panel consisting of three theologians and a
historian. Our historian, Dr. Mark Kalthoff will set the Statement
into by a brief, 15 minute, explanation of how what was happening in
American Christianity at the time. Then Rev. David Ramirez will give a
15 minute presentation on the situation in the Missouri Synod and
American Lutheranism at the time of the Brief Statement. The first
dogmatician, the Rev. Dr. Karl Fabrizius, will explain the details of
the problems listed above, again in 15 minutes. Finally, our second
dogmatician, the Rev. Robert Zagore, will make an apology for the
Statement in 15 minutes.

Then we will allow the panelists to respond to one another for a half
hour, when we will break for lunch. We will then reconvene and open
the panel to the floor. Those in attendance may ask questions or make
statements, either way the panelists will respond. This format has
been chosen specifically to keep the conference from being boring, but
also to ensure that the panelists actually address real world issues
and concerns and so that we might all learn not only from them but
also from those in attendance.

The conference itself is free, but lunch is not. We will order in
pizza and take a collection to cover the cost for those who stay. You
may, of course, choose to go elsewhere for lunch or to bring your own
lunch.

The conference will begin with the panelists at 11 but be preceded by
an opportunity for Private Confession with Rev. Petersen in the Chapel
beginning at 9:30 am and the Holy Communion at 10:30. We will also
have the opportunity to learn better how to read and sing Gregorian
chant as presented in the Brotherhood Prayer Book under the tutelage
of the Rev. Dr. Ben Mayes at 3:30 pm and then to pray Vespers together
from the Prayer Book in the Chapel at 4:30.
