Dear GMail Users,

Several of you have been having trouble posting to lists operating through our
server. Once I recognized that it was GMail users ONLY, that made
troubleshooting a bit easier…but, so far, not successful. The problem appears
to be that our domain registrar--GoDaddy, which is cheap and has done well for
us in the past--now has a Nameserver that is malfunctioning (OR deliberately
set to mess up because they think it's more secure that way, etc.) and routing
all mail that is incoming to our server first through a server of their own.
Google--understandably, to me--balks at this; it is expecting the mail server
to have the correct PTR, but with GoDaddy's/secureserver.net's rerouting, it
doesn't, so GMail terminates the exchange without sending your message on,
reporting back to you that the intended recipient email address "doesn't
exist." Well, sure enough, the list you were trying to post to *does* exist…it
just can't be reached!

Below, please find the exchange I've had with GoDaddy Support thus far. My
'attitude' in my response to them stems from my having dealt with the 'support'
usually given when the majority of those needing it don't know what they're
doing: they SKIM what you wrote and then give you generic instructions for
something you've known how to do for over a decade. ISP's do the same thing. My
initial contact from now on is going to read, "I'm having an email issue of
some sort, due to a DNS setting. Please send me some generic nonsense, and then
I'll send you the details, since if I send them now you're going to ignore them
anyway"…

God willing, things will be functioning again 'soon(-ish)'…

 - - -My Initial, Detailed-enough, IMO Support Ticket - - -

This past week, GMail users have not been able to deliver mail to my mail
server. The reason seems to be in the way the DNS works for smtp.cat41.org: I
set it properly for 71.28.138.209, but checking it with MXTools reveals that it
is first routing through one of your servers—72.167.238.201. Re-setting things
in the Domain Manager did nothing to help.

Thank you for contacting Online Support.

If you are unable to receive messages, you would need to contact your mail
provider regarding this issue. [EJG NOTE to GMail Subscribers Concerning This
Sentence from GoDaddy 'Support': NO, IDIOT, IT WON'T DELIVER MAIL TO MY MAIL
***SERVER,*** not to my individual mail account! Learn how to READ! People are
waiting on their mail because you're trying to blow me off with this stupid
sentence and your following beginner's guide to DNS!] If you need to update
your A record, you can do so by following the below steps.

 - - - My Response - - -

Your response gives no evidence of your having actually read my message well
enough to understand the issue; I should have remembered that the first
response to ANY help ticket is boilerplate, instead of actual helpful analysis
of the complaint, much less resolution. Please kick this up to a supervisor if
it is going to require multiple messages, as I really don't have the time to
piddle through this.

My A record for smtp.cat41.org reads--as it should--71.28.138.209 in DNS
Manager.

When ALL gmail users became unable to post messages to lists to which they were
subscribed, I checked and rechecked all of my server settings, checked to make
sure there were no blacklist issues, etc., AND THEN checked EXTERNALLY (i.e.,
NOT using the GoDaddy.com DNS Manager) to see what was reported as the IP for
each of my domains and found (from both DNSStuff.com and MXTools.com):

0 mail.cat41.org 71.28.138.209
10 lists.cat41.org 71.28.138.209
20 smtp.cat41.org 72.167.238.201

As you can see, smtp.cat41.org is incorrect EVEN THOUGH it is set to
71.28.138.209 in your DNS Manager. Since 72.167.238.201 belongs to
secureserver.net, this would seem to indicate that YOUR NAMESERVER is screwing
this up--apparently in a way that ISPs generally don't have a problem with, but
Google does.

If you can point me to an RFC that says that Google should be accepting of
starting an smtp session with 72.167.238.201 in order to send mail to a domain
at 71.28.138.209 and tell me whom I should contact at Google, that'll be fine;
otherwise, I need you to fix my zone file, because your DNS Manager WON'T, as
it wrongly says that it is already set to 71.28.138.209.

I don't claim to be a DNS expert, but I've had this domain for 15 years and
survived IP changes, registrar changes, and every goofy new standard employed
by blacklists for that long, as well as setting up dozens of domains for myself
and others; the minuscule credit of thinking I might have a clue as to how to
edit the zone file using GoDaddy's tools--especially given the content of my
initial message--ought to have been given, not what I received.

So, that's where it sets…
