Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
I have a special prayer request. It is for a nonagenarian named Helen.
She came here from her retirement home in Florida after a lifetime of
civil service in Brooklyn, NY. She is also a lifetime Lutheran who
never married. She ended up moving to a senior living apartment
complex in Farmington 6-8 years ago when her health became such that
she felt she needed help from family. Said family consists of her 90+
year old sister-in-law and her sons, grand children and great grand
children—all LDS, of course.
My reason for seeking your prayers is that Helen has been bed bound
under hospice care at home for quite a while now. The last couple
weeks she has significantly deteriorated, though she still was able to
receive the body and blood of our Lord with me yesterday. However, in
her weakened state her nephew, who has ascended to the bishopric of
his ward, has taken the opportunity to do some “mission work” with
her. Where two weeks ago Helen was rejoicing in her Baptism and
enjoying my visits and devotions with her, she now has become agitated
and anxious. She was also ready to die and there were a couple of days
she thought she was going.
Now I realize some of her agitation and anxiety is born of delirium.
But based on my conversation with her yesterday, in which she asked
some questions about her baptism and burial that were prompted by her
nephew the bishop, she is being tempted to become Mormon in her latter
days.
So, please pray our Lord to keep Helen in her baptismal grace and to
protect her from the temptations of the evil one as he uses her
dearest loved ones to doubt the faith and have second thoughts about
her pastor. And please pray for me as I continue to bring the Word and
Sacrament of our Lord to her in the face of the LDS presence her
nephew and the rest of the family and the barriers they seem to be
placing in the way of this ministry. I am walking a tightrope of
giving her the truth without saying anything she would take as nasty
about the loved ones who have taken such good care of her all these
years.
