Theses on Repealing Exorcism
by Aegidius Hunnius
translated by Paul A. Rydecki; Foreword by James D. Heiser

Aegidius Hunnius (1550–1603) has been described as one of the greatest exegetes of the later years of the Lutheran Reformation. He served on the theological faculties of the University of Marburg (1576–1592) and the University of Wittenberg (1592-1603). An articulate defender of the Evangelical Lutheran faith, Hunnius was instrumental in removing the influence of crypto-Calvinism from Saxony, and was the primary author of the Saxon Visitation Articles (1592). The exorcism was restored in Saxony the same year that Hunnius was called to the theological faculty of the University of Wittenberg; as a pivotal figure in the effort to remove the pernicious influences of crypto-Calvinism from Saxony, Hunnius almost certainly supported the restoration of exorcism. However, at the time of his death, Hunnius had become aware of the effect the practice of exorcism was having on belief in the sufficiency of Baptism. The 128 theses of his Theses de Abrogando Exorcismo (Theses on Repealing Exorcism) set forth the arguments of supporters of the rite of exorcism, and Hunnius' critique of that argument.

Schola Pietatis, Volume 2

by Johann Gerhard
trans. by Rev. Dr. Elmer Hohle

Many generations of English-speaking Lutherans have benefited from several of the devotional writings of Dr. Johann Gerhard (1582-1637). Until now, Gerhard’s most comprehensive devotional work, the Schola Pietatis (1622–1623) has never been available in English. This amazing work was published in five volumes. Gerhard wrote hisSchola as a corrective to the True Christianity of Johann Arndt (the ‘grandfather’ of Pietism); Gerhard believed Arndt was influenced by the writings of mystical authors and Gerhard developed his Schola solely on the basis of Holy Scripture. Gerhard’s Schola stands as one of the greatest achievements of one of most influential theologians of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

In the second volume of this great devotional work, Gerhard builds on the foundation established int he first volume: “In the first volume of this treatise I have related in an orderly way the main, important, and motivational reasons which should generally encourage and awaken every person toward godliness. Now, additionally, follows that we provide a sure form and good directions from the Word of God as to how and in what manner a person should and can practice godliness. It is necessary for us to know both, for God has prescribed both for us in His Word.”

Rev. Dr. Elmer Hohle's translation of the Schola Pietatis (1623) is his latest contribution to the Repristination Press collection of Gerhard's works.
