Principia Theologiae Fanaticae (1619)
(Principles of the Fanatic Theology which Theophrastus Paracelsus Fathered, which Weigel Polished; as these were reduced under Examination to Brief Theses)
by Nicolaus Hunnius
trans. by Richard Dinda
introduction by James Heiser

Nicolaus Hunnius (1585–1643) was one of the most significant theologians of the Age of Lutheran Orthodoxy. Hunnius was a professor of theology and philosophy at the University of Wittenberg by the age of 24. He eventually became the superintendent (bishop) of Lübeck, where he led the clergy in an effort to defend and restore the Church in that city.

Hunnius was the author of numerous theological works, including the Diaskepsis Theologica (1626). His Principia Theologiae Fanaticae was a careful analysis of the theological principles of those whom he deemed 'fanatics'—the followers of Paracelsus, Valentin Weigel, and the adherents of the Rosicrucian movement. Indeed, Hunnius' Principia is one of the first contemporary responses to the Fama Fraternitas of the Rosicrucians, and it places the occult movement within the context of a more widespread interest of Hermeticism, Cabalistic studies, and occultism which had developed during the early years of the Italian Renaissance. Hunnius challenged the theological presuppositions of the “fanatics” and upheld the authority of Holy Scripture and the office of the holy ministry. The introduction and extensive notes place Hunnius’ Principia in its historical context and help the reader gain a better understanding of the relationship between the “fanatics” and the rise of the Thirty Years War.

Diaskepsis Theologica (1626)
by Nicolaus Hunnius

trans. by Rev. Dr. Richard Dinda and Rev. Dr. Elmer Hohle

Originally published in 1626, Hunnius’Diaskepsis Theologica was profoundly influential in the formation of Lutheran dogmatics. In an age when Calvinists were attempting to convince Lutherans that there were no church-divisive doctrinal differences between the two confessions, Hunnius set out to refute the unionistic efforts of the Reformed. He demonstrated that the Reformed err in fundamental articles of the faith. His extensive Preface analyzes the Synod of Dort, revealing the callous way in which the Reformed treated the Arminians—and thus the hypocrisy of Reformed complaints about the “unloving” Lutherans.

Hunnius’ careful scholarship, orthodoxy, and his unwillingness to compromise the truth for the sake of worldly peace provide a powerful testimony to 21st century Lutherans who have become accustomed to hazy doctrinal agreements and sentimental unionism.

Diaskepsis Theologica is not light reading, but it is quite edifying, and a vital book for the Lutheran Church.
