While I know this is a php channel, we do on occasion talk about the merits
of top posting v bottom posting, CSS and many other things. If you don't
have streaming content that needs to be kept protected in any format, don't
bother reading this unless you want to know about being able to easily take
vids off youtube, etc (not that you couldn't do so before).
K, so back to Real Player.
Real Player, who I thought was dead except for Real Alternative, turns to
not be quiet so dead. In fact, in the next week some time, they are going
to be releasing a new version that makes it VERY EASY to take MOST kinds of
video. You name the format, it's on the list. The feature set of the
release targets being able to take videos from youtube, but not through
reading the source code. This is a browser plugin and detects the presence
of video playing and takes it from there. Further, streaming vid IS NOT
PROTECTED - I've personally tested RTMP and MMS streaming protocols.
(curiously, it's not able to detect video encased in an swf file {yet} that
was playing first in a playlist, but it was able to detect the second thing
in the playlist was an flv and offered to download during the flv playback)
Now to save everybody an extra email in their box, I know you could swipe
vids using a handful of firefox extension or even steal a streaming video
using a ram dump of some kind, station ripper comes to mind. But Real
Player is different. It puts this tech into the hands of n00bs, and it is
EASY to use.
So, for those of you who manage multimedia content, here is an article that
makes a good starting point.
http://www.beet.tv/2007/06/adobe_is_not_re.html .
So, here is my question for those of you on the uphpu list. Who here
manages multimedia (vids, tutorials etc) that needs to be kept protected,
and what form of DRM are you using?
