Any of the javascript libraries is probably going to do what you want. I
have personally used prototype.js, yui, and extjs, and they can all do
what you need.
I don't see anything wrong with what you're trying to do, so good luck.
To solve the nasty popup when hitting back after a post, simply redirect
(to the same page even) after every post. It's a very common approach.
