Hi Scott, I don't think I'm a pro by any means but I have two possible options for you to consider, both of which I have had good experiences with.
1and1 is the first. They are really big, and in 5 years, I don't think I've ever had any downtime. At least none that I could blame on them. I use a shared package, but I have a colleague who uses their managed server package and it has been pretty solid. I'm not sure which flavor of Linux they use, but I know we have full root access if we need it. Their Customer Service does take a while to respond, but I haven't really had much opportunity to use them. I believe my colleague has an account manager with them, so the level of service may be better if you have a bigger package. The second is hostmysite.com Absolutely phenomenal service and very willing to work with you. I was only on a shared server with them, and despite being one of the very small fish, I was treated exceptionally well. They are very flexible, and were reasonably priced. I left them only because the specific need I had to use them for vanished, and my package with 1and1 is quite a bit cheaper. I'm not sure on pricing for either, but from what I have seen they are fairly competitive. Hope that helps, Mike -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Scott Morris Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2008 2:42 PM To: UPHPU.org Subject: [UPHPU] Reliable Hosting Been having some trouble with the hosting provider I'm using. One of them can't seem to stay up, and the other won't look at why the server they gave me is screwed up. I need some recommendations for what I'm looking for: 512 Mb RAM burstable to 1024 1800 MHz processor 50 Gig HDD space 2,000 Gb monthly bandwidth Price range: $50-$65/mo. Full root access to install/configure/set things up however I want without CPanel, Plesk, or anything like either of these. The processor, HDD, and monthly bandwidth is negotiable. Obviously, I'm looking for something with great uptime. I would prefer that the hosting provider offer an OpenSUSE system, although I am comfortable with the RH-based systems as well. I am looking for a VPS, Dedicated, Managed, or similar package. What do ya'll pros use, and why do you like them? Thank you for any relief from this problem. I've had nothing but grief for almost a month, now, to the point where clients are losing money. Thanks a bunch.
