One of the reasons I don't use XAMPP for the Mac is that they ship
with known broken combinations of PHP and libxml according to this page:

PHP 5.2.9 & libxml-2.7.2. They'll need to use at least version 2.7.3
of libxml (combined with PHP 5.2.9 or higher) for them to work
correctly. Other wise parsing XML from PHP that uses the libxml
library will result in striped brackets.
