This is the pre SQL92 ANSI SQL syntax. Pretty much all of the major database vendors support the SQL92 syntax now, and most folks use that. But if you've been writing SQL queries for awhile then you got used to writing them in this older style (FROM x, y WHERE x.id = y.id) and that can be a hard habit to break.
