I dropped this question into IRC, but I thought I'd put it on the list for some wider input.
Considering how common database usage is with PHP I figure it is worth taking the time to find the best solution. The one PHP book I have outlines PEAR::DB, which has clearly been superseded by PEAR::MDB2. I've also seen a number of suggestions for PDO as well.
