I have and love Linode. Use them for both personal and professional setups.
Easy to manage and I've had virtually no down time in the 3+ years with
them.

IMHO VPS is the only way to go, end of story. Hardware costs too much, and
needs replacing. Regular shared hosting sucks. VPS for life.
