monit can actually also be used to regulate services if they are
starting to cause a problem.  You can ask monit to restart a service
if it is consuming too much resource, or if the httpd server doesn't
respond.

Here is an example from my server (sanitized of course)

the code goes here /etc/monit.d/monitrc

the idea being, monit will notify you that it took that action, and
buys you time to figure out what is going on, with minimal impact to
clients
