Merrill, This is a little off topic; however, it is has helped me in the past. I like to use xdebug and the features that it provides with presenting errors for me and additional error information (ie stack traces etc). This might be beneficial along with your print statements in your current development environment. It has helped me on more than a few occasions with errors that I was tacking down.
