Personally, I prefer using the Mail package in PEAR:
http://pear.php.net/package/Mail
It has a fairly straightforward set of options, makes it really easy
to set up different SMTP configs for different purposes, or you can
set them inline when you send the mail as well:
$mail =&Mail::factory('smtp', array('host' => 'smtp.domain.com',
'auth' => true, 'username' => 'mysmtpuser', 'password' => 'smptpw'));
I've actually had good luck with quite a few of the mail-related
packages in PEAR, the Mail_Mime package makes creating HTML emails and
attachments quite easy.
