My sister (a graphic designer) has designed a layout for her blog that she'd like to use, and I've volunteered to help her translate the sliced-up images into an actual web site. She's currently on Blogger, and while I'm sure you can use their software to create any layout you'd like, I quickly became frustrated with the layers and layers of "helpful" tools they play between me and the actual code. I'm happy to stay with Blogger if anyone can show me how to bypass all of that crap, but I'd prefer to use something I can install on my own server and work on in an environment I'm more familiar with.
The two options I'm seriously considering are WordPress and Movable Type. Between the two, WordPress seems to have a more template-oriented approach, complete with (if my admittedly brief perusal was accurate) their own Smartie-like templating language. (Does anyone actually use Smartie any more? Am I dating myself by mentioning it?) I was never a huge fan of Smartie, but whatever, I can deal. Movable Type seems more "bare metal", which I'd prefer. Does anyone have experience with these three tools that they could share?
