George,

There's very little chance I'll do it. The number of these accounts that need set up in the near term is low enough that it's working well enough to just set up accounts on request. If it gets to be a problem, there are ways to provide for password change via the web and someone might need to look into them.

I'm not sure managing accounts' own passwords via passwd is a direction good to go in when a desired benefit of using SVN is ability to scale back the number of shell accounts to www.ja-sig.org that are required. Shell access and SSH tunneling is no longer required for commits under JA-SIG SVN. Using passwd for password change re-introduces the shell account requirement.

In any case, there's little chance that I'll be the one to implement better account self-management here. I've stepped up -- alongside Eric and I assume others would do the work as well if needed -- to create and update a few accounts as needed to address an overlooked issue in the move from CVS to SVN so that development is not severely interrupted. I'll forward this note along to the JA-SIG infrastructure team to see if someone can do something about account self-management for the longer term.

Jason mentioned the potential of using something like Atlassian Crowd to manage accounts over the web. Apparently account self-creation isn't yet a feature but is on the short list for implementation. Presumably Crowd could be configured to provision SVN authentication and authorization files, or SVN configured to consult it.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,
any chance you could use mod_auth_external
(http://www.unixpapa.com/mod_auth_external/) and use
/etc/passwd for authentication so that
we can manage our own passwords through passwd?

Thanks

   George
