I've always thought something that gave the portal a UI area equivalent to the Mac doc, which could have some dynamic portlets rendering in an "icon" mode would be cool. Something like a DLM fragment that would have your mail (with unread count), calendar (w/ date icon & event count), alerts w/count, workflow w/completion %, or other little persistant pieces of info. As a custom state it even seems relatively straightforward to then add some portal handler to "send to dock/toolbar" which would instead of minimizing to a collapsed titlebar, "dockify" the portlet.
