What version of uPortal are you using? Person Directory has been rolled out into a stand-alone project and that project has a mult-valued user attribute support. Depending on your version of uPortal you may be able to use this stand-alone person directory code.

attribute are now returned and handled from LDAP queries. consequences to doing so that I'm not familiar with?
