This sounds like a great idea but I'm not sure a days notice is sufficient to really hash something like this out. Surfing around the GSOC site I can't find what we would need to provide with our application which would be a big help in knowing how much prep time we would need to spend on this. Especially for uPortal this is something I feel like the steering committee would need to chew on at least a little bit to make sure the support is actually there to pull something like this off.

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to start some discussion around whether uPortal (and CAS, and portlets) should apply to be a Google Summer of Code project. Deadline for submissions is Wed (3/12). Other organizations that have participated are listed at: http://code.google.com/soc/2007/ the list includes: Moodle, Joomla, Portland State, OSU OSL, and others.

Some points that came out when floating the idea off-list were:

* what would the students do?



* what happens to the code after it's done (e.g. maintenance)?

I would propose we put up a wiki page where we start to accumulate "summer-sized" tasks (somewhat larger than the bite-sized, but ideally nicely contained). Stuff that institutions or contributors would like to do, but don't have time, but would be available for mentoring, assistance w/requirements gathering, and review. I would propose that any SoC projects follow our existing practices in terms of either falling into the sandbox (perhaps for new portlets or integrations) or in developmental branches for other work. I'd also propose that in order for an idea to be officially proposed, the mentor must be willing to be actively involved in development, and take on support and maintenance after the summer project is completed. I think the idea of being able to tie uPortal development more closely to students gaining experience in their chosen field is particularly exciting, and that the Google program in particular is high-profile enough that it would be an added awareness boost too. Open Source Developers: Love community and open source? Want to make it easier for schools to use? Our OpenSource group is hiring.
