Hi,

I think you are right that the names of the lists can be a bit misleading and another name could help with people who are not sure which list to post to. Some people work on their campus as developers for their portal, and think that uportal-dev is the right place for developers' questions. The name change will not help the case where one is pressed by their problem and don't want an answer from any other uportal users, but the people with the real knowledge - the developers themselves. They will do it just in order to raise the importance of their problem to a higher level.

That's why I think uportal-users may sound like a community list, not a help with deployment list, and it should be either renamed to the plain uportal or uportal-help, and this one can be uportal-framework.

And one more thing that could really help ... every month a reminder should be sent to both lists with news ... like this for example:

UPORTAL INFO
----
list uportal-help: if you are stuck with your portal installation and have problems
list uportal-framework: if you want to contact the developers about helping them or new features or bugs that can only be solved by intervention in source code
Recommended new instalation is uPortal3 stable!
Current stable version uPortal3 is: 3.1.x [link] [link help manual]
Current development version uPortal3 is: 3.x (subversion tag xxx) [link]
Currest stable version uPortal2 is: 2.6.x [link] [link help manual]
Currest stable version uPortal2 is: 2.6.x [link]

I wonder if we should consider some list renaming.

People consistently post to uportal-dev with questions that are about them "developing" their portal.  Look at the list name, think about what those people are doing, it's really not a stretch.  "uportal-user" sounds like it might be for people to learn how to login, move portlets around, etc.  "uportal-dev" sounds more reasonable when I need to ask a question about how to write a new portlet for my portal.

I wonder if we should have names that help make the distinction between "development of the core framework services" and "development and configuration of portals using uPortal" better.

For example, what if "uportal-dev" was renamed "uportal-framework" and "uportal-user" was named "uportal-admin".  I don't really like the name "uportal-admin" but you get the idea.  It just feels like the names we currently have will continue to cause us trouble, because they do not match well with the intent of the content to be posted to them, at least from a new-user-to-the-community perspective.
