Mary, Have you seen the Global Content Caching patches which were submitted by Rutgers? I believe Susan had looked at them at one point, and that Drew may have committed them. They are described at:

The other question/thought I have is: have you looked at using a standalone proxy like Squid? I've often wondered if it was worth stripping out some of the URL rewriting and other proxying items we baked into uPortal in favor of documenting configurations in other products more focused on those tasks.
