I know of at least one portal where they had to skip using uPortal to control channel controls and instead rolled their own mechanism using CSS to 'float' channel controls into the chrome. This was done because it wasn't possible to show something like 'Edit' control to only certain people.

I now have the need to do this again. It strkes me as something that could be a pretty typical need. I know the portlet itself could (and probably should) guard against going into a certain portlet mode, but it seems like having the portal also help, by not even drawing the portlet chrome control, if the user is not intended to have the control, would be helpful.

If we ever get to a point where uPortal supports additional portlet modes, it seems like having controls for these modes be only accessible (or at least displayed) to certain users/groups, would be valuable.

What does everyone else think?
