Instead of adding a static method "public static void clearSystemCharacterCache() {" to StaticRenderingPipeline can you add a comparable method to the IPortalRenderingPipeline interface and use that in the code that needs to call it? I'll see about pulling together some better uPortal developer guidelines to help with some of this stuff.
