For convenience, here it is below. I've not looked at or thought about it in a while, so pls forgive me if it is outdated: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following are suggestions based on the idea that first impressions are important, that uPortal will likely have a much happier userbase if changes were made to the out-of-the-box skin/templates so that fewer changes and less UE design time would need to be spent, and with a goal attract a greater number of talented developers to the uPortal development community by having a nicer out-of-the-box product. It can sometimes be confusing UX/UE-wise to repurpose the same action to produce different results. For example, in uPortal 3.2.1's default skin: * When you hover over the current tab, it shows tab related actions. * When you hover over that same tab when it isn't the current tab, it shows all of the portlets within the tab that you can maximize. In addition, there seem to be a lot (too many?) ways to maximize portlets in the default uPortal skin: 1. via maximize icon in upper right of each portlet 2. dropdowns under main tabs of any main tab except the current one 3. clicking on a portlet in the subnav bar 4. clicking on a portlet in the jump to menu after having maximized any portlet 5. clicking on a portlet in site map portlet Here are some proposed changes: * Whenever you hover over any tab it would show a dropdown of the list of portlets. * Get rid of the subnav list of portlets (if you use hover/dropdown and the maximize icons that should be enough) * Allow drag and drop of tabs for placement. * Perhaps show a small "x" to the right of the tab when the tab has been hovered over for a little under a second that would let you delete the tab (with confirmation to delete using http://jqueryui.com/demos/dialog/ ) and/or possibly let the user drag the tab far enough away from the other tabs to indicate they want to delete it (with confirmation to delete). * Remove the jump to menu from showing up to the right of a maximized portlet in the default skin by default, but perhaps add an option that could be set in portal.properties to turn it back on for those that really like it. This task would probably need subtasks created, and probably more discussion to determine whether these changes would be the most intuitive and easy/practical to use and extend. -- You are currently subscribed to [email protected] as: [email protected] To unsubscribe, change settings or access archives, see http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/JSG/uportal-dev
