Hey Laura, Oakland might be able to help out with documentation regarding the F5 load balancer. I'd have to coordinate something with our network folks first though since I don't work on that part of our uPortal infrastructure.
We don't do too much in regard to monitoring, we created a custom servlet solution that sits in Tomcat and gives our F5 a place to look. If the script is unavailable or says uPortal is not running correctly then the F5 will e-mail a list of users.
