I like this. Does the search always take up vertical space or is it sometimes minimized/hidden/relocated? The 'x' to the right makes me think it can 'go away,' in which case I am wondering how you make it appear. In our case, we have a little search icon in the upper right which brings you to the normal view of the search portlet. (At least that is what it is supposed to do - I just noticed now it is broken for us!) I could see where perhaps having instead perhaps expand into a search box below the header might be valuable.
