On behalf of the uPortal Steering Committee, I will take this opportunity of
Eric's transition to reflect on the status of the uPortal project. Anyone who
attended the recent Apereo conference in San Diego will likely attest that
there is a lot of great energy in the uPortal community. The
uPortal/uMobile/Portlet related sessions were lively and well attended. In
fact, we will be following up with a note on archived presentations you may be
interested in viewing. We currently have many framework and portlet committers
who are actively contributing. In the last year, we have seen consistent
uPortal and portlet releases and the attendance at our community calls has been
steady.

As many in the community know, project leadership takes many forms. Generally
individuals see a need and step up to help fill it. Over the past eight years,
Eric has stood up and helped answer questions on the discussion lists, joined
architectural discussions in IRC, lead conference seminars and engineered
uPortal releases. Others have also assisted with these tasks and will continue
to do so, as with the most recent uPortal release announcement. On behalf of
the uPortal Steering Committee, I can say we sincerely appreciate all the fine
work Eric has put into the uPortal project to date and we look forward to
working with others in the community as they step up and become more involved.
If you have been thinking of contributing to the uPortal project in some
manner, please consider this an invitation.

The one official role that we will be filling is replacing Eric as one of the
two elected committers on the uPortal Steering Committee. That discussion will
proceed on the uportal-dev list in the near future.

Thanks again, Eric, and best of luck with your new position! And thanks, also,
to the rest of you that make this such a great community to be a part of! While
we can be proud of the uPortal code base, we can be even more proud of the
collaborative and supportive uPortal community.
