I just noticed something new today.

With the upgrade to Hibernate-core 4.2.19Final, uPortal picked up some new logging that was added in 4.2.8. See https://hibernate.atlassian.net/browse/HHH-8654 and https://hibernate.atlassian.net/browse/HHH-8793.

We see the statistics in the portal.log file in local/dev environments because we have the following in hibernate.cfg.xml
         <property name="hibernate.generate_statistics">true</property>

UW Madison, perhaps this might be useful in exploring some of the issues you had been experiencing. It might also be useful in looking at how we can improve login performance.
