Doctoral fellowship in linguistics: Quantificational aspects of linguistic diversity
The Department of Linguistics of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (Leipzig) seeks candidates for a doctoral fellowships in linguistics. The fellowship is for two years, with the
possibility of one or two six-month extensions. Candidates should be interested in working in the interdisciplinary context of the Max Planck Institute.
The doctoral
fellow is expected to propose a thesis/dissertation research topic in which mathematical/statistical methods are applied to linguistic diversity. The project might deal with the analysis of typological databases or with the analysis of diachronic relationships, but other proposals pertaining to the quantification of linguistic diversity are also invited.
The fellow should already have an MA in Linguistics or an equivalent qualification, and be either registered or qualified to register in a recognized doctoral program at a university or equivalent
degree-awarding institution.
Except for approved absences (e.g. fieldwork, conferences, vacation), the place of work is Leipzig. The fellowship is available from 1 October 2004, but a later starting date may be negotiated.
Good knowledge of English is required.

The Rolex Awards for Enterprise aim to encourage a spirit of enterprise in individuals around the world by supporting outstanding efforts in areas that advance human knowledge and well-being.
The Rolex Awards provide financial assistance to people who want to implement concrete working projects.
The 2006 Selection Committee invites applications for projects that fall into the
following areas: -- science and medicine;
- technology and innovation;
- exploration and discovery;
- the environment;
- cultural heritage.
Projects must expand knowledge of our world, improve the quality of life on the planet or contribute to the betterment of humankind.
The Selection Committee will choose five Laureates, who will each receive a cheque for $100,000 and a specially inscribed gold Rolex chronometer. The five Laureates will be invited to an awards ceremony in October 2006 as guests of Rolex SA.
The Selection Committee may also decide to grant a
number of second prizes to other individuals worthy of support, the Associate Laureates.
Application Form must arrive at the Secretariat by:
- May 31, 2005 for projects from Asia, the Pacific and North, Central and South America;
- September 30, 2005 for projects from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Applications may be submitted by individuals only.
Only one individual may appear on each application form.
Only one project may be submitted per applicant in each series of Rolex Awards.
No third-party nominations are accepted.
Applicants must submit their own ideas and proposals.
No institutional or collective applications are allowed.
If a project represents the efforts of several individuals, one person must represent the group and sign the application form.
Should such a group effort be chosen, the Rolex Award will be presented to the individual representative.
Rolex SA will have no obligation to any other members of the group.
Applications for the 2006 Rolex Awards for Enterprise may be submitted by anyone of any age or nationality.
Excluded are former Rolex Laureates; Rolex employees; Rolex agents and retailers and their employees; employees of advertising, public relations and any other agencies acting for Rolex; members of the immediate families of any of the above; any other person closely connected with Rolex SA
Former entrants, including Honorable Mention winners and Associate Laureates, but excluding Laureates, may apply to more than one series of Rolex Awards.

The Terms of Grant:
- Fellowships are awarded for up to 3 years.
- Doctoral fellows will receive a stipend of 1,000 Euro per month;
- Postdoctoral fellows will receive a stipend of 1,416 Euro per month.
- Family allowance can be granted if applicable.
- For one of the postdoctoral fellowships, applicants with a pronounced interest and skill pertaining to the methodology and theory of Metropolitan Studies will be preferred.
