The Lontar Foundation is seeking candidates to fulfill the positions of 
Director of Publications. Details of the duties involved are given below:
Position Description: Director of Publications
The Lontar Foundation
The Director of Publications of the Lontar Foundation is chosen by the 
Foundation's Executive Director in consultation with an independent human 
resources management advisor or team. The Director of Publications is in charge 
of the Foundation's publications program. Applicants for this position should 
demonstrate the following skills:

  1.. Management skills: Applicant must have a minimum of five years of 
experience in the publishing industry, preferably in a company that produces 
literary titles. Applicant must be able to choose, with approval of the 
Executive Director, the personnel required for the publication of Lontar 
books-including but not restricted to editors, translators, proofreaders, 
typists, transcribers, illustrators and so on. Applicants must show prior 
experience in financial management. 
  2.. Fund-Raising skills: Lontar is self-reliant on funding and the Director 
of Publications is expected to spend a portion of his or her time working with 
the Executive Director in writing proposals to obtain funding needed for the 
Foundation's publications program. 
  3.. Program skills: Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of the history 
and cultures of Indonesia, particularly its literary traditions, both oral and 
written. 
  4.. Computer skills: Applicants should have broad knowledge of computer 
technology and demonstrate appreciation of the potentials in using information- 
and print-on-demand technology to advance the Foundation's publishing goals. 
Mastery of word-processing and basic design programs is a must. Because the 
Foundation plans on publishing an on-line literary journal, experience in web 
design and development is also recommended. 
  5.. Communication skills: Applicants must be fluent in Indonesian and English 
and have excellent writing and speaking skills to work with the numerous 
personnel in his or her charge, to conduct stimulating meetings, and to give 
talks about Indonesian literature and the goals of the Foundation's publishing 
program. 
  6.. Personal skills: The ability to interact smoothly with all kinds of 
writers, translators, and other personnel involved in a publishing project. 
Experience living and working abroad is not a prerequisite but knowledge of 
foreign educational institutions, especially where Indonesian language, 
literature, and culture is taught, is also a desirable characteristic. While, 
as a matter of law and good practice, the age of applicants is not limited, 
Lontar is looking for dynamic individuals who demonstrate a clear devotion to 
the promotion of Indonesia through its cultural traditions, particularly 
literature. 
The objective of the position of Director of Publications is an uninterrupted 
flow of quality publications. In the course of day-to-day operations, the 
Director of Publications will bear the following duties and responsibilities:

  a.. With the approval of the Executive Director, negotiate contracts with 
translators, editors, designers, and all other external personnel involved in a 
publishing project. 
·         In line with the above, develop a set of standard contracts for all 
publishing related personnel as well as job descriptions for each position;

·         Working closely with the Executive Director and other division heads, 
develop and execute a master plan for the Publications Division.

·         Preparing correspondence on behalf of the Executive Director 
regarding publishing agreements

·         Filing and archiving all division records, including book designs, 
films etc.

·         If necessary, representing the Executive Director in negotiations 
with other parties

·         Preparing annual, two-year, and three-year budgets

·         Preparing fact sheets for all publications

·         Working with the marketing and sales staff on the promotion of 
Foundation publications

·         Preparing press releases

·         Organizing promotional events

 

While ultimate responsibility for the implementation of these duties is that of 
the Director of Publications, he/she will, if Foundation financing permits, be 
assigned an assistant to help with this work.

Candidates are asked to submit to the Foundation, before the end of August, 
their curriculum vitae, photograph, and list of references. Candidates should 
also include a cover letter describing why he/she would like to work for the 
Foundation and what he/she would do to help the Foundation achieve its goals.
Screening of candidates for the positions will take place in September for 
employment to begin in October.
