The Brookings Institution, a non-partisan public policy organization in Washington, D.C., seeks to fill the following positions in its Metropolitan Policy Program:
Data Coordinator / Research Assistant Deadline to Apply: November 12, 2010 Basic Function Primarily manages and organizes large datasets and network files; and identifies appropriate data sources and responds to statistical/analytical queries from senior research staff. Conducts statistical analysis for the Program's work on demographic, social and economic trends. Prepares tables, GIS maps, and graphic presentations on Program's research findings. Education/Experience Requirements Bachelors of Arts or Sciences in the social sciences or computer science. Minimum of two years experience in managing, organizing, and manipulating multiple large-scale datasets; experience maintaining efficient electronic file systems; general understanding of basic IT infrastructure, specifically the relationship between users, servers, and networked storage in addition to basic knowledge of network protocols; general understanding of computing hardware, specifically processing power and memory usage rates, is a plus; experience with SQL or other data manipulation scripts; and experience working with Visual Basic is preferred. Work experience in fast-paced, public sector office (e.g., government, non-profit, or policy/political organizations) strongly preferred. Knowledge Requirements Strong interest in metropolitan demographics, economics, and policy required; proficiency in Access, Excel, SAS, ArcGIS and PowerPoint required; knowledge of SPSS, STATA, and Keynote desirable; strong organization, high initiative, strong interpersonal skills, eye for detail, creativity and design, mature judgment; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; and clear writing skills preferred. Helps conceptualize and manage projects and project sections; conducts research; drafts summaries of findings; drafts brief, reports, and memos; helps review and edit papers; and generally helps author publications emanating from the policy program. Helps plan policy meetings and public events as needed. Serve as external research liaison to scholars and constituency groups, conducting outreach and fielding inquiries as needed. Masters and conveys core program frameworks and formats into projects with multiple internal and external partners. Education/Experience Requirements Masters degree in public policy, economics, government, or other related disciplines required. Also required: Six years of professional experience writing and researching in a metropolitan, state, or federal policy environment, especially aimed at translating research findings in a clear and compelling way to policy and lay audiences. Significant project management and editorial experience is critical. Must have worked in a fast-paced, policy-oriented environment. Practical work experience in public policy field preferred. Experience in public policy, journalism, or issue campaigns is also welcome. Competence to undertake research and writing assignments with little or no supervision required. Knowledge Requirements Exemplary writing, research, and editing skills required. Must be able to produce clear, rigorous, in-depth policy analysis as well as to simplify and synthesize complex research, statistical, or policy information and convert academic literature into accessible, policy relevant documents. Must be a quick learner on a wide variety of public policy and metropolitan issues. Needs to be able to excel in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines when necessary. Experience "versioning" of in-depth materials into a variety of high-impact formats is important. Requirement of project management and ability to organize and supervise the work of others critical. Must be a team player who can collaborate well with others on joint writing assignments.
