CALL FOR PAPERS

Electric Vehicles
Sponsored by the Transport Geography Specialty Group, the Urban Geography
Specialty Group, and the Economic Geography Specialty Group

2012 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers
February 24 – 28, 2012
New York, NY USA

One of the major current developments in transport comes from the electric
vehicle (EV). China and most of the developed world have instituted policies
incentivizing EV production to meet targets for fleet penetration. In the
US, the Obama administration established a goal of 1 million EVs in the US
by 2015, and California has established a Zero Emission Vehicle program to
regulate the emissions of cars sold in the state. Escalating gasoline prices
are among several factors driving interest in alternative fuels for vehicle
travel. Finally, the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt have been introduced as the
first mass-produced electric vehicles in the era of the gasoline engine.
This push toward electric vehicle deployment occurs despite significant
question over the short and the long-term utility of electric vehicles in
the marketplace. EVs are currently limited by their short range and high
costs, and potentially dramatic developments in battery technology are still
years off. Questions likewise remain about charging infrastructure,
technological development, the economic impact of EV production, and the
marketability of EVs.

This is a call for transportation research on and related to electric
vehicles. Paper topics appropriate for the session include but are not
limited to the following components:
• Consumer adoption
• Policies and planning
• Travel behavior
• Technological development
• Infrastructure issues
• Environmental and resource impacts
• The role of pricing and energy costs
