2nd Call for papers- “Eastern Feminism”: Gender and Geography in Asia

Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting

2013 AAG Annual Meeting, Los Angeles, April 9-13, 2013

Sponsored by: Geographical Perspective on Women
Organizer: Nazgol Bagheri, University of Missouri-Kansas City

“Feminism in Japan needs more methodological self-awareness. Feminism is
becoming an indispensable part of social consciousness and it does serve to
promote social justice. Yet feminism is still interpreted as a women’s social
movement, and especially as a women’s empowerment movement; it has not yet been
properly acknowledged as a method of analysis.” Sakiko Kitagawa, 2011

This challenge is not unique to Japanese feminist studies; it holds true in
other countries in the Near East, Middle East and Far East Asia. Feminist
geography, as a highly creative and diverse sub-discipline of geography, has
been the focus of several empirically- and conceptually- focused studies by
interdisciplinary scholars participating in AAG annual meetings. But, there
have been few works on feminist theories and practices in non-Western
contexts. This session offers a forum to develop discussion on the study of
women and to introduce ongoing feminist scholarship in non-Western contexts
that are often associated with interesting juxtapositions of traditional
patriarchy and innovative Western-style economies. We seek to understand the
current status of feminist geographical scholarship across Asia, by welcoming
papers that are focused on women’s issues in Asia.

While our emphasis is Asian countries, we encourage comparative studies as
well. By arranging the papers under feminism in non-Western contexts, we do not
mean to overlook the diversity among the different versions of feminism such as
secular or Islamic feminism in those countries. Instead, we seek to offer a
place for scholars with special and geographically-focused interests to create
shared analytical and comparative tools.

Papers can be framed in one of the following themes, but other relevant papers
on gender and geography in Asia will be considered:

  * Studies on female subjects comparing or connecting rural and urban
contexts (examples might include education, healthcare, public space, commerce,
development, technology, transportation)
  * Analyses and assessments of feminist studies in a specific nation
  * Critical engagement with methodologies and/or applications of feminist
methods in geographical research
Please send proposed titles and abstracts of up to 250 words to Nazgol Bagheri
([email protected]) by October 16.
Presenters will be expected to register at the AAG
website(http://www.aag.org/cs/annualmeeting/register) by October 24th 2012.
