~labsec, you can find people in ~dopzod/urbit-help who are usually happy to chat and answer questions (myself included). If you have trouble getting in there, let us know. Instructions should be a part of the sequence on the site.
dpc, it's true that Urbit has some rough edges — but I seem to have no problem using it for simple text-based chat. I probably have good luck though. I'm not averse to there being other channels. The real problem is, what should we use? That question often just leads us back to dogfooding being a good thing. Which it really is.
