ENA Guidelines for Emergency Department Nurse Staffing Safe, appropriate, effective staffing in the emergency department is a primary concern for emergency nurses. The ENA Guidelines for Emergency Department Nurse Staffing were developed to help ED managers and administrators easily calculate their staffing needs. The guidelines and tool can be used in all types of emergency departments as each ED�s unique data are entered by the manager on an Excel spreadsheet tool. The FTEs needed for safe and effective staffing are automatically calculated based on six key components: patient census, patient acuity, nursing interventions, length of stay, skill mix, and non-patient care time. The new guidelines and tool were tested in 29 volunteer U.S. emergency departments with varying demographics.
