It consists of a belt worn around the chest, which is hooked to either a cell phone or palm pilot with global positioning technology. The belt tracks electrical activity of the heart. When it picks up irregular activity, it sends a digital signal to emergency services. A heart attack happens when a piece of plaque breaks away and completely obstructs blood flow in the affected artery. This triggers specific electrical changes that occur a few minutes ahead of symptoms or signs of trouble. That's what the system detects. So, an ambulance could, technically, be on its way to where you are as the heart attack is happening. The device is recommended for high-risk patients.
