It would be quite slow; which however might be okay to just flash a
small controller. But I remember hassle with the various modes of the
device. I once wanted to use CBUS pins for JTAG and the other pins for
serial communication at the same time. As far as I remember, it wasn't
possible to design schematics in which switching between serial and
bitbang mode wouldn't cause unwanted glitches on control lines. It was
something like "CBUS pins become tristated when not in bitbang mode",
but I'm not 100% sure anymore. Furthermore, the documentation wasn't
complete about which signals could be put on which pins. Some are
restricted. After spending some hours on it, I now won't use FT232 for
anything but serial communication and recommend FT2232 for JTAG.
