I don't see any problem with busybox 1.1.3 on my system, so maybe it's 
a problem with the newer version.

Have you tried other programs that use the line-drawing characters? 
You might have "dialog" installed.  Try:
     dialog --yesno hi 20 40

If the lines render properly in that program then it might be an Urwid 
bug.
