Strong written, verbal and visual *communication skills* required. *Specific Objectives and Responsibilities* The Labs Developer will perform software development for on-going and future projects. The primary projects to be supported include: *ReflowIt* - The objective of the ReflowIt project is to perform research and development into the automation of a process that can transform PDFs generated from page scan content into forms more easily viewed from a small mobile device. The source will be a PDF with one or more scanned page images. The page images will often be backed by OCR text. The specific tasks to be performed on the ReflowIt project includes: o Initiate an open source project, including the creation of a public repository on Github. All code and documentation (with the exception of the interim and final reports) developed in the project will be maintained in the git repository. o Evaluate possible alternatives or additions to the tools used in the initial proof of concept and generate an interim report identifying the tools evaluated and recommendations. The interim report should also include recommendations for how to measure the relative usability of the reflowed documents for inclusion in an analysis section in a final report. o Develop a batch script that will take as input a PDF (including a URL to downloadable PDFs) and produce as output both a reflowed PDF and a set of individual page images (in a web compatible format such as JPEG or PNG) from the reflowed document suitable for display in a mobile app. o Develop technical documentation suitable for using the tool and maintaining any developed software. o Using the automation tools developed, perform automated reflowing of a representative sample of PDFs from the JSTOR EJC collection and produce an analysis characterizing the usability of the reflowed content (the method to be described in the interim report). o Develop a final project report o Potentially attend (and possibly help organize) a Hackathon o The objective of the Annotations project is to develop a high-fidelity (live data) prototyping/test environment for exploring multiple annotations use cases with end users. The project will leverage existing open-source annotations tools where possible. Likely tools to be used include annotatorjs (http://annotatorjs.org/), hypothes.is (https://hypothes.is/) and annotorious (http://annotorious.github.io/). Prior experience with any of these tools or similar ones would be a plus. The specific tasks to be performed on the Annotations project includes: 1. Develop flexible infrastructure for performing a range of annotations experiments. 2. Extend one or more open source annotations tools to improve compatibility with content and add features needed to support high fidelity prototyping. 3.
