(Oracle, SQL Server or InterSystems Caché) Configuration of the database software to adhere or comply with technical and business standards. Plan, schedule and implement database upgrades and patches. Provide database support for software development or application projects. Understand the database environment “big picture” and impact of different areas on the environment(s) by taking a strategic approach to project planning, operational tasks, system planning, and balancing and prioritizing short and long term requirements. Migrate data from an old server to a new server (replacement) or an old database to a new database. Plan, test, and execute the migration. Recommend server replacements when necessary. Develop, implement, and periodically test backup and recovery plans. Ensure backups are completed as scheduled and that they include all files necessary to successfully recover a database to full operation. When failures occur, locate and use the backups to return the database to operational status as quickly as possible, while losing as few committed transactions as possible. Produces weekly/monthly status reports for project work and operational work. Discusses issues, resolutions and plans in a complete manner, providing relevant context for the reader which include staff and management at all levels. Understands the database security models employed. Is able to perform tasks for authentication (setting up user accounts to control logins to the database), authorization (setting permissions on various parts of the database), and auditing (tracking who viewed or modified data in the database). May design new security models or enhance existing models. Performs database monitoring and tuning. Identify bottlenecks and correct them. Monitor the server hardware capacity and the way the operating system configuration impacts performance. Monitor the type and configuration of databases indexes and other object that can impact performance. Review queries run against the database to ensure they perform as expected. Be proactive to design performance into an application from the start. Tune the database so as not to wait for problems to occur and fix them. Working closely with vendors, application analysts, and developers to make sure that best database practices are followed so good performance will result. Proactively identifies and communicates project deliverables, milestones, tasks, resources and contingency plans. Communicates major issues promptly to management, team members and affected customer(s). Proactively facilitates document (standards, SOP, policies, etc.) initiation, reviews, status. Serves as a team liaison and principal contact for project-related activity. Provides customer with information necessary to enable informed business decisions. Monitors and plans database storage (SAN, NAS, local, etc.) capacity requirements. Configures the database use of assigned storage for optimal performance. Represent the DBA team to other Regions, organizations or vendors outside of the company. Actively supports and incorporates mission into daily activities. Performs other related duties as assigned. Participates in IS systems and structure teams and boards as needed. May participate as a reviewer, as a subject matter expert, and as a requestor as needed.
