The primary role is as Database Administrator (DBA). The individual will also perform in a backup capacity for the IT Systems Administrator. As DBA, the individual will coordinate changes to computer databases, and test and implement the database applying knowledge of database management systems. The individual will also plan, coordinate, and implement security measures to safeguard the computer databases. As backup to the IT Systems Administrator, the individual will monitor and support various web-based and mainframe systems, and to engineer, control, and support desktop, telephony, and networked environments. This position will work closely with the Director of Information Technology to ensure that all systems are responding within service level agreements established with the corporation's business partners. Primary Responsibilities: . Develop standards and guidelines to guide the use and acquisition of software and to protect confidential and proprietary information . Modify existing databases and database management systems and direct programmers and analysts to make changes . Test programs and databases, correct errors, and make necessary modifications . Plan, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard information in computer files against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification, and disclosure . Approve, schedule, plan, and supervise the installation and testing of new products and improvements to computer systems, such as the installation of new databases . Train users and answer questions . Establish and calculate optimum values for database parameters. Includes tuning databases. . Specify users and user access levels for each segment of a database . Develop data model describing data elements and how they are used . Develop methods for integrating different products so they work properly together, such as customizing commercial databases to fit specific needs . Review project requests describing database user needs to estimate time and cost required to accomplish projects . Identify and evaluate industry trends in database systems to serve as a source of information and advice for upper management . Work as part of a project team to coordinate database development and determine project scope and limitations . Write and code logical and physical database descriptions and specify identifiers of database to management systems and direct others in coding descriptions . Revise corporate definition of data as defined in data dictionary Secondary Responsibilities: . Provide support in the following areas: . Desktop hardware and software . Network layer support . Web-based infrastructure, operations, and applications . Routine and ad hoc IT operations (e.g., removable storage backups) . Manage the support queue . Responsibility for the quality of support - includes timely resolution of all support requests, ensuring proper documentation is delivered, and that appropriate root cause analysis is performed . Engineer changes to the organization's physical infrastructure as business and technical needs dictate change - this includes (but is not limited to): . Servers . Workstations . Printers . Other hardware (e.g., telephony, routers and switches, storage devices) . Configure and deploy these changes . Assist with the evaluation and resolution of system security issues . Manage relationships with hardware and software vendor resources . Researches alternatives for hardware and software solutions through all phases from gathering of requirements to selection and negotiation of pricing and terms . Other duties as assigned Required Experience/Skills: . Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science - advance degree is a plus . 4-6 years of experience in database administration . 3-4 years of experience in desktop / network / hardware and software support . Excellent customer service skills . Excellent personal organization skills . Excellent written and verbal communication skills . Excellent troubleshooting and analysis skills . Ability to work alone and in group settings . Ability to interface with vendor resources Desired Experience/Skills (while not all are required, our client requires experience in at least 5 of the following areas): . Experience with web-based applications Environment: Our client's Information Technology environment is currently a hybrid in transition from legacy AS/400 applications, the majority of which are written in RPG and CL, to browser-based applications, the majority of which are written in Java. DB2/400 continues to be the primary relational database (RDBMS) source, supplemented by PostgreSQL. The client is moving to a Windows environment using SharePoint 2013, BizTalk 2012 and SQL Server 2013. This transition is expected to be in progress through 2018. Both environments must be supported during that time.
