Nautilus 2.10.0 on a Ubuntu Hoary distro. At least in Icon View you can drag a box around the item, but you can't do it in List View in Nautilus (although you can do it in Konqueror and Windows Explorer). By having a Select command in the context menu (only needed when in single-click mode), I could press the right button, move mouse to Select, and release the button. I would go further and propose a second menu item called "Extend selection" or "Select list", to emulate the Shift+Click that extends the current selection with all the items between the previous one and the clicked one. What if you have 1000 files in the list? With a semantics of "left button for selection", double-click could be used like a Shift-click or Ctrl-click. List widgets already work that way in many systems. I prefer the more consistent *one click* for everything (even with the selection problems), but then my significant other has problems when using my desktop because of this.
