This is a useful ability to have.
Mac OS accomplishes this by having folders expand to
show their contents in list view.
AFAIK Nautilus will have this feature in a future
version -- would that suffice?
The problem I see with your suggestion is that it
breaks the rules of spatial navigation: objects are
shown somewhere that they aren't.
It would be more logical to group the child folder
items together and put a border around the all of
them, that in some way represents them as being in a
subfolder. Off the top of my head, I'd say the gnome
folder icon could be expanded & faded and the child
icons within it. This would make it an icon view
equivalent of expandable list view.
But like the previous respondent said, it seems quite
a complex thing to explain. Whereas expandable folders
in list view are grasped quickly.
