Sorry to say but i think that the need for the icon to be included is a
must and so it needs something to confine things and the label is still
the best option to me. Your idea sounds nice but i think it will look a
bit lost in the desktop! 
Just imagine a very translucent label almost none existent but existent
enough to be seen.
