i've only noticed this behaviour when connecting to USB3/SS ports. or if the device wants to draw more than 900ma/fails to specify current requirement.

A powered USB2 hub seems to fix the problem.

Tested known Working USB->serial devices:
Visa USB Card Reader (USB 1.1)
Entegra USB->SCSI adapter (works in serial mode, USB2)
SuperGeneric GSM card reader (works in serial mode, USB 1.1)
Infowave USB->LPT adapter (shows up in the PrintPane, USB 1.1)
Prolific USB->IEEE1394 adapter (does show up in the Printing Pane, USB2, does work in BiDirectional mode)
Zoom USB Fax Modem - shows up as both a modem and a fax device

Works but doesn't show up in printer pane:
LSI USB->LPT adapter (USB 1.1), but can configure in CUPS:
<localhost:CUPS>

Does NOT work, at all, since Yosemite:
Micro Scorpius 30 10key USB keypad

I know there are a few serial (e.g. USB-to-serial) device users on this
list, so has anyone noticed that OS X Yosemite doesn’t support serial
(CDC ACM) devices in the Network pane and the Printing & Scanning
(faxing) pane anymore? Anyone know if this is a bug in Yosemite? Will it
be fixed or were those features removed on purpose? What can be done to
restore functionality other than reverting to a previous OS X?
